The Party, Government, and Blue House: "Reforming Power Institutions is a Historical Mission Entrusted by the People"
[Asia Economy Reporter Jeon Jin-young] The ruling party, government, and Blue House emphasized the completion of reforms in power institutions such as the prosecution, police, and National Intelligence Service (NIS), stating that "reforming power institutions is a historic mission entrusted by the people."
On the morning of the 30th, the Democratic Party of Korea, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of the Interior and Safety, NIS, and the Blue House held a meeting at the National Assembly Members' Office Building to discuss these measures. The main points include strengthening democratic control over the prosecution, preparing follow-up legislation for the autonomous police system, eradicating the NIS's domestic political interference, and transferring counterintelligence investigation authority.
Kim Tae-nyeon, the floor leader of the Democratic Party, said in his opening remarks, "We are restarting the unfinished task of reforming power institutions left over from the 20th National Assembly today," adding, "This is a historic mission entrusted by the people to the Moon Jae-in administration and the Democratic Party, which came to power through the Candlelight Revolution. Democratic control over power institutions must be established based on the principle of popular sovereignty."
Cho Jung-sik, chairman of the Democratic Party's Policy Committee, also stated, "We will democratically decentralize monopolized power and ensure checks and balances among power institutions," and added, "The party will promptly push forward related legal amendments to ensure that reforms of power institutions proceed without setbacks."
Minister of Justice Choo Mi-ae, who attended the meeting, emphasized, "This reform is a major transformation in criminal justice experienced for the first time since liberation," and said, "We will decentralize the excessive authority concentrated in the prosecution, such as significantly reducing direct investigations that have been pointed out as problematic, and strengthen the autonomy of police investigations."
Minister of the Interior and Safety Jin Young said, "With the introduction of the autonomous police system, we will strive to provide security services tailored to local field conditions, bringing us closer to the lives of residents."

New NIS Director Park Jie-won also stated, "The core of the NIS reform is eradicating domestic political interference, transferring counterintelligence investigation authority to the police, and strengthening democratic control," adding, "Since the launch of the Moon administration, we have been practicing the eradication of domestic political interference through the bold abolition of domestic intelligence officers (IOs), but for the reform measures to be irreversibly completed, reform is absolutely necessary." Director Park further added, "Strengthening democratic control, such as transferring counterintelligence investigation authority to the police, is also a task that can only be accomplished through legal amendments."
