[Asia Economy Reporter Dongwoo Lee] Kwon Oh-hyun, Honorary Chairman of Samsung Electronics, said on the 28th, "The most important thing during difficult times is strong leadership."
Honorary Chairman Kwon made this remark during an internal broadcast commemorating the day Samsung Electronics produced the world's first 64-megabit DRAM prototype on August 1, 1992. He said, "1992 was a meaningful year when Samsung became number one both qualitatively and quantitatively in the memory semiconductor field."
Kwon, who was the head of the DRAM development team at the time, recalled the success of the development, explaining, "The driving force and competitiveness that maintained the 'technology super-gap' were the responsibility and challenging spirit of the group leaders such as former Chairman Lee Byung-chul and Chairman Lee Kun-hee, as well as the dedicated efforts of the employees."
He emphasized the importance of the system semiconductor sector for the future development of Samsung's semiconductor business and repeatedly highlighted the role of Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong's recently announced 'Semiconductor Vision 2030.'
Honorary Chairman Kwon said, "In the past, Samsung's ability to surpass Japanese semiconductor companies also stemmed from a competitive advantage based on Korea's unique corporate culture of 'group leader management.'"
He explained that while Japanese semiconductor companies, which pursued a 100% professional management system, were unable to make bold investments during industry downturns, Samsung was able to make decisive decisions even in difficult situations.
