‘The Future of Yeongnam is the Future of Korea’ … Governors of 5 Yeongnam Cities and Provinces Gather
July 27: 100-Minute Discussion on Economic Revitalization, Quarantine Measures, and Metropolitan Union Plans
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] The heads of metropolitan governments in the Yeongnam region will gather in one place to discuss the future of the Yeongnam area.
Byun Sung-wan, Acting Mayor of Busan, Kwon Young-jin, Mayor of Daegu, Song Cheol-ho, Mayor of Ulsan, Lee Cheol-woo, Governor of Gyeongbuk, and Kim Kyung-soo, Governor of Gyeongnam, the five metropolitan leaders, will attend the ‘2020 Yeongnam Future Forum: The Future of Yeongnam is the Future of Korea’ held at 2 p.m. on the 27th at the Lotte Hotel in Busan.
This forum was organized to prepare for the future of Yeongnam in the post-COVID-19 era, as the prolonged spread of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) has severely damaged the regional economy.
It is the first event since the 2015 Yeongnam Region Mayors and Governors Council where all five leaders gather.
Kim Soon-eun, Chairperson of the Autonomy and Decentralization Committee, will preside over a 100-minute discussion on regional economic revitalization plans, quarantine status, and metropolitan area win-win cooperation by region.
The first session will cover post-COVID regional economic revitalization measures, the necessity of super-metropolitan cooperation, key issues by region, and the need for super-metropolitan quarantine related to regional quarantine and winter season prevention.
The second session will consist of a discussion on the Yeongnam metropolitan alliance. Among these, Busan’s key issue will be the ‘2030 Busan World Expo.’
Byun Sung-wan, Acting Mayor of Busan, said, “It is meaningful that this forum, where the five cities and provinces of Yeongnam have come together to find new answers in the COVID era, is held in Busan, a Northeast Asian maritime capital and gateway city.”
“The future of the region can find development potential in metropolitan areas where borderless cooperation takes place, and I hope Yeongnam will be the leader. I expect today’s event to be a new opportunity for solving regional issues and for win-win cooperation among the five cities and provinces of Yeongnam,” he added.
