China "US Demands Closure of Chinese Consulate General Within 72 Hours"
[Asia Economy Reporter Koo Chae-eun] Amid escalating US-China tensions, the United States has requested the closure of the Chinese Consulate General in Houston, Texas, within 72 hours.
According to Bloomberg on the 22nd (local time), Wang Wenbin, spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, confirmed at a regular briefing that reports in the US stating that the Chinese Consulate General in Houston was asked to leave by 4 p.m. on the 24th were true. Earlier, on the 21st, Houston local media Fox26 and others reported this citing sources.
Spokesperson Wang stated, "The US side suddenly demanded the closure of the Consulate General in Houston on the 21st. This is a unilateral political provocation by the US against China and violates international law and the basic norms of international relations." He added, "This seriously violates relevant provisions of the China-US Consular Treaty, and China strongly condemns it," and warned, "We urge the US to immediately withdraw this wrong decision; otherwise, China will definitely take just and necessary countermeasures."

The US demand to close the Chinese Consulate General came after a fire broke out there. Around 8:20 p.m. the previous day, a fire occurred in the courtyard of the Houston Chinese Consulate General. Houston police suspect that the fire started when consulate staff were burning confidential documents before evacuating.
