China hints at retaliation against the UK... Is UK-based 'HSBC' the first target?
Suspension of Extradition Treaty with Hong Kong Is Violent Interference in Internal Affairs
It Will Face Opposition from 1.4 Billion Chinese People
[Asia Economy Beijing=Special Correspondent Jo Young-shin] The Chinese Embassy in the UK pointed out the unfairness of China's sanctions and hinted at retaliation.
Earlier, the Chinese Ambassador to the US condemned the seriousness of US interference in internal affairs in an interview with American media.
On the 21st, when the Chinese Embassy in the UK announced that the British government decided to suspend the extradition treaty with Hong Kong citing the enforcement of the Hong Kong National Security Law, it immediately stated that it was "violent interference in China's internal affairs" and that "China strongly condemns and firmly opposes this."
The Chinese Embassy further urged to "immediately stop interference in China's internal affairs and not to go down the wrong path."
The Chinese state-run Global Times warned that the UK's move could be seen as a concession in trade negotiations with the US and that it could further jeopardize relations with China.
The Global Times also reiterated, "Any attempt to obstruct the enforcement of the Hong Kong Security Law will face opposition from 1.4 billion Chinese people."
The newspaper suggested that British companies headquartered in the UK, such as HSBC, could become targets of China's retaliation. HSBC is suspected of providing information to the US regarding Meng Wanzhou, the daughter of Huawei's founder and Chief Financial Officer, who was arrested in Canada.
