Pohang City to "Submit Application to Ministry of Education Next Year for Establishing Medical School"
Feasibility Study for Attracting Pohang Medical School "Optimal Conditions"
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Dong-wook] Pohang City, Gyeongsangbuk-do announced on the 19th that it will actively promote the attraction of a medical school, aiming to apply to the Ministry of Education next year, based on the service results showing that it has the optimal conditions for establishing a research-oriented medical school.
Last year, Pohang City commissioned a "Feasibility Study for Attracting a Medical School," analyzing the necessity of establishing a medical school, medical conditions and current status, as well as future promotion strategies from various perspectives. The results of this study will be officially announced at the end of July.
According to Pohang City, a comprehensive analysis of the service results shows that the necessity and feasibility of establishing a Pohang medical school are very high. Gyeongbuk does not have any first-class hospitals covering all severe diseases nor any advanced general hospitals. The number of doctors per 1,000 people is only 2.1 (average 3), indicating an absolute shortage of medical personnel.
Contrary to the weak medical conditions, Pohang possesses cutting-edge scientific infrastructure such as world-class universities like POSTECH, R&D institutions including the Biotechnology Research Center, and related companies. It is analyzed that Pohang has the optimal conditions for establishing a research-oriented medical school, with facilities such as the Small and Medium Research and Development Special Zone, Bio Open Innovation Center, and Membrane Protein Research Institute.
Based on the results of this study, Pohang City plans to actively propose the establishment of a medical school by visiting the Ministry of Health and Welfare and the Ministry of Education in sequence. Aiming to submit the application for establishing a medical school to the Ministry of Education in 2021, the city will hold policy forums for attracting a medical school and establish strategies to concretize feasibility, such as execution strategies for attracting the medical school.
