Emart Offers Limited Discount on 10,000 Large Live Lobsters
[Asia Economy Reporter Seungjin Lee] Emart is offering large lobsters at affordable prices following the snow crab.
Emart announced on the 16th that until the 19th, they will sell Canadian large lobsters weighing 900g to 1kg at 31,500 KRW each when Shinsegae points are accumulated, limited to 2 lobsters per person and 1 lobster per store.
This is a limited event with 10,000 lobsters available, and the event will end once the stock is depleted. Emart imported live lobsters from Canada by air, and secured cost competitiveness by reducing distribution stages through a direct import contract with a local partner.
The retail price of large lobsters in major seafood markets ranges from 38,000 KRW to 40,000 KRW, and in lobster specialty restaurants, it costs more than 60,000 KRW to enjoy them.
The large live lobsters being sold this time are the most preferred size overseas, about 2 to 3 times larger than the 300-450g size mainly sold in large marts. With the right amount of meat and tender texture, the unique flavor of lobster can be enjoyed simply by steaming without any additional sauce.
High-end crustaceans such as lobsters have become popular this year with a significant increase in sales. Looking at Emart’s sales, sales of high-end crustaceans like lobsters and snow crabs increased by 141% in the first half of this year. The proportion of high-end crustaceans such as lobsters and king crabs in total crustacean sales also expanded from 7.5% in 2019 to 21.3% in the first half of 2020.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, dining out decreased and the frequency of eating at home increased, leading to a rise in demand for new ingredients that people usually do not eat often. Emart anticipated this demand and offered various high-end crustaceans at affordable prices.

Previously, in April and May, Emart sold a total of 80 tons of live Russian snow crabs (40 tons each) at 3,780 to 3,800 KRW per 100g, selling out in just 4 days. This large purchase was more than three times the total amount of snow crabs sold at Emart last year, which was 25 tons, allowing consumers to enjoy snow crabs at low prices.
