The MMCA Gwacheon Outdoor Project is a public contest program promoted as part of the MMCA's efforts this year to specialize the Gwacheon branch and revitalize its outdoor spaces. In line with the main goal of the Gwacheon branch to be a "family-centered art space that resonates with all generations," the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art plans to present works outdoors that serve as resting places accessible to everyone. With the three keywords "breath, rest, enjoyment," the grassy area within the outdoor sculpture garden at Gwacheon will be transformed into a space for visitors.
For this project, the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art received recommendations for 15 architect teams through domestic architecture academia, critics, and the media. After the first round of screening, four teams were selected as second-round candidates, and following presentations, stpmj was chosen as the final winning artist of the 'MMCA Gwacheon Outdoor Project 2020.'
stpmj plans to propose the idea of creating a new terrain surface on the sloped grassy area surrounded by walking paths within the Gwacheon outdoor sculpture garden through their work titled 'Gwa.Cheon.Pyo.Myeon The Surface.' The work consists of about 700 individual structural units reminiscent of trees, lotus leaves, and umbrellas, which spread out and cluster to form a horizontal plane. Visitors can enter inside to experience visual, tactile, and auditory interactions. 'Gwa.Cheon.Pyo.Myeon The Surface' was highly evaluated for considering work efficiency and environmental issues and reflecting them in the project.
