[Asia Economy Reporter Joo Sang-don] As consumers avoid face-to-face contact due to the spread of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19), online shopping continues to surge. In May of this year, online shopping transaction amounts increased by nearly 1.5 trillion KRW compared to a year earlier.
On the 3rd, Statistics Korea released the 'May Online Shopping Trends' report containing this information.
According to the report, the total online shopping transaction amount was 12.7221 trillion KRW, an increase of 13.1% (1.4687 trillion KRW) compared to the same month last year. Among this, mobile shopping recorded 8.6944 trillion KRW, up 21.0%.
Looking at online shopping transaction amounts by product category, leisure services (-72.1%) and travel and transportation services (-61.6%) decreased compared to the same month last year, while food services (77.5%), daily necessities (38.0%), and food and groceries (33.1%) increased.

Among detailed product categories, the proportion of mobile shopping transaction amounts was highest in food services (93.7%), e-coupon services (87.2%), and bags (79.0%). Compared to the previous year, categories such as cosmetics (-16.2 percentage points) declined, but travel and transportation services (17.8 percentage points), others (11.0 percentage points), and office supplies and stationery (9.1 percentage points) increased.
