Choo Mi-ae on Special Prosecutor Proposal: "We Will Consider It Comprehensively Together"
[Asia Economy Reporter Jang Sehee] On the 1st, Justice Minister Choo Mi-ae stated regarding the request that a special prosecutor should investigate the 'alleged collusion between prosecutors and media' that "we will consider it comprehensively together."
Minister Choo made this remark during an urgent inquiry at the National Assembly's Legislation and Judiciary Committee in response to a question from Kim Nam-guk, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea, saying, "It is difficult to respond at this moment because the investigation is not yet complete."
The special prosecutor system was a self-reform measure introduced by the prosecution in 2010 following the 'sponsor prosecutor' controversy. The Prosecutor General can appoint a special prosecutor in cases where there are public suspicions regarding a prosecutor's criminal charges or when social attention is focused on the matter.
Rep. Kim said, "Currently, Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-youl reversed his own statement and convened a professional investigative advisory group, so the investigation team is requesting to be allowed to conduct an independent investigation," adding, "According to the special prosecutor operation guidelines, it is important to appoint a special prosecutor by Prosecutor General Yoon to enable an independent, fair, and strict investigation."
