At a press conference held online on the 1st at the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education in Jangan-gu, Suwon, marking his second anniversary in office, Superintendent Lee pointed out, "Higher education is being disrupted due to the current March semester system," adding, "The main reason is that the university entrance procedures and processes are aligned with the universities."
He further stated, "Currently, we submit university applications starting in September for rolling admissions," and "As a result, the teaching that should be done throughout the year ends by August."
In particular, he said, "Since everything is aligned with the College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT), education in the third year of high school is conducted using EBS video materials," and added, "The September semester system is the only solution to normalize education, which is currently facing disruptions, and to smoothly resolve school education."
He also pointed out, "The CSAT is always held in November, and after the test, schools become chaotic," adding, "It is impossible to manage. Students spend several months before entering university, which also causes problems for universities."
However, Superintendent Lee explained, "If the academic year ends at the end of May, the CSAT can be held at the end of May, and university admissions can take place from June to August without any issues," and noted, "Japan and South Korea are the only countries in Asia, Europe, and North America that operate on a March semester system."
