Jasaeng Global Scholarship Recipient Proves Efficacy of Acupuncture Treatment for Glossopharyngeal Neuralgia in International Academic Journal
[Asia Economy Reporter Hyun-ui Cho] Jaseng Medical Foundation announced on the 29th that a paper by Yoon Jeong-min, a 4th-term global scholarship student (currently enrolled in the College of Korean Medicine at Woosuk University), on the efficacy of acupuncture treatment for occipital neuralgia has been published in an international academic journal.
According to Jaseng Medical Foundation, Yoon's paper titled "The Effect of Acupuncture Treatment on Occipital Neuralgia: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis" was published in the latest issue of the SCI(E)-level international journal BMC Complementary Medicine and Therapies (IF=2.479).
According to the study results, compared to drug treatment alone used for occipital neuralgia, combining acupuncture treatment with drug therapy results in a greater reduction in pain. This study is a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that applied acupuncture and drug treatment to patients with occipital neuralgia.
The paper reports that when comparing the effects of acupuncture treatment and drug therapy, the mean difference in the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) for pain was -2.35, indicating a significant reduction in pain. Additionally, when acupuncture treatment was combined with drug therapy, the odds ratio (OR) for treatment success was approximately six times higher (OR=6.68) compared to drug treatment alone, showing statistical significance. The odds ratio is used to verify the significance of differences in the likelihood of a specific event (such as improvement due to treatment) between groups.

The research team considers acupuncture an effective treatment option for occipital neuralgia since no serious side effects caused by acupuncture were identified in this study. In charge of this research, Dr. Ha In-hyeok, Director of the Spine and Joint Research Institute at Jaseng Korean Medicine Hospital, stated, "Since occipital neuralgia is a disease with a complicated diagnosis and treatment process, we believe these research results will be helpful in treating occipital neuralgia."
