Police Operate Intensive Crackdown on Robbery and Theft from July to September to "Protect Ordinary Citizens' Livelihoods"
Focusing on Thorough Victim Protection and Swift Recovery
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Gwan-ju] The National Police Agency announced on the 29th that it will operate a 'Focused Crackdown Period on Robbery and Theft' for three months from July 1 to September 30 to eradicate crimes infringing on people's livelihood and protect the lives of ordinary citizens.
A National Police Agency official explained the crackdown background, saying, "These crimes threaten and unsettle ordinary people amid the worsening economic situation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic."
The main targets of the crackdown are burglary and theft involving break-ins at residences and offices, as well as stolen goods offenders. The police will conduct a 'two-track' crackdown, with the Criminal Division's Violent Crime Team handling burglary cases and the Life Crime Investigation Team responsible for minor theft cases.
When major incidents occur, the police plan to respond with full force from the outset to resolve them swiftly and focus on tracing the distribution routes of stolen goods to recover the victims' property. In particular, they will strengthen crackdowns on smartphone theft, illegal overseas smuggling offenders, and offline receipt-type phone fraud (voice phishing).
