Speaker of the National Assembly Park Byeong-seok plans to hold a plenary session on the 29th after reviewing the weekend negotiations between the ruling and opposition parties to finalize the election of standing committee chairs and to process the third supplementary budget within the current extraordinary session.
On the 26th, Speaker Park held a marathon meeting with Kim Tae-nyeon of the Democratic Party of Korea and Joo Ho-young of the United Future Party to discuss the organization plan, including the issue of the Law Committee chairmanship.
Han Min-su, the Speaker’s press secretary, told reporters after the meeting, "Speaker Park will hold a plenary session on the 29th," adding, "The supplementary budget will definitely be processed within this extraordinary session (until July 4th)."
It has been reported that Speaker Park and the floor leaders of both parties attempted to reach a comprehensive agreement on all current issues, including the allocation of the Law Committee chairmanship and various national investigations demanded by the opposition.
On the 15th, the Democratic Party, which elected six standing committee chairs including the Law Committee without the participation of the United Future Party, insisted that the remaining standing committee chairs must be elected at the plenary session on this day to process the third supplementary budget.
On the other hand, the United Future Party argued that, to check the government and ruling party, the Law Committee chairmanship should be held by the opposition party as per tradition, and if this condition is not met, they declared a last stand, saying the ruling party can take all the standing committee chairs.
