Descendants of a Four-Generation Gugak Master Family... Dongpyeonje Style Heungboga Tradition Preserved
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Park Dong-wook] On the 26th, Gyeongju City in Gyeongbuk announced that Jeong Sun-im (78), who has been nurturing traditional Korean music talents in the region for four generations, was officially recognized by the Cultural Heritage Administration as the holder of the National Intangible Cultural Property No. 5, 'Pansori (Heungboga)'.
Master Jeong Sun-im began learning Pansori at the age of 7 from her mother and Pansori master, the late Jang Sun-ae (Jang Woljungseon). She later inherited the lineage of the late Park Nok-ju (deceased in 1979) and studied Heungboga under the late Park Song-hee (deceased in 2017), a former holder. In 2007, she was recognized as the holder of the Gyeongbuk Province Intangible Cultural Property 'Pansori (Heungboga)'.
Master Jeong is a descendant of Korea's unique traditional music family that has devoted efforts to nurturing traditional Korean music talents over four generations, including Jang Seok-jung (Geomungo master and great-grandfather), Jang Pan-gae (Pansori National Master and maternal grandfather), Jeong Gyeong-ho (Ajaeng Sanjo player and younger brother), and Jeong Gyeong-ok (Gayageum Byeongchang player and younger sister). She demonstrates the highest level of skill with well-balanced vocalization and singing ability, and is highly regarded for her achievements in transmission activities and teaching capabilities.
'Pansori (Heungboga)' is one of the five main stories of Pansori, National Intangible Cultural Property No. 5, characterized by the singer's witty storytelling and humor. Master Jeong Sun-im transmits the Heungboga of the Dongpyeonje style. The five main Pansori stories refer to Chunhyangga, Simcheongga, Heungboga, Sugungga, and Jeokbyeokga.
Joo Nak-young, Mayor of Gyeongju City, stated, "We are very proud of this recognition of a National Intangible Cultural Property holder, which greatly elevates the status of our regional traditional culture." He added, "We will strive to boost the morale of intangible cultural heritage transmitters who preserve and pass on our disappearing traditional culture amid difficult circumstances."
