Angry Jeonbuk Civic Groups Demand "Stop Illegal Saemangeum Jamboree Site Reclamation Construction!"
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Gominhyeong] Over 50 civic groups in Jeonbuk Province have urged the suspension of the illegal reclamation work at the Saemangeum Jamboree site.
Social organizations such as the Saemangeum Seawater Circulation Promotion Joint Action, the Tentatively Named Saemangeum Seawater Circulation Promotion Five Major Religions Joint Action, and the Korean Environmental Council (including 43 organizations such as Ecological Horizon) held a press conference at the entrance of the Jeonbuk Provincial Office on the 23rd, stating, “The budget required for the reclamation of the Saemangeum Jamboree site, designated as a tourism and leisure area under the Saemangeum Basic Plan, is being used from the Farmland Management Fund,” and criticized, “This indicates from the beginning that the Saemangeum Jamboree site development project was an irregular project decision.”
They argue that the Saemangeum Jamboree site reclamation project cannot be regarded as a farmland development project.
They said, “There is no farmland use plan such as what crops will be planted, nor any agricultural water supply plan, and unlike existing farmland reclamation projects, high-level reclamation is being carried out. Considering these factors comprehensively, the Saemangeum Jamboree site reclamation project is not a farmland development project,” and defined it as “a tourism and leisure land development project illegally diverting the Farmland Management Fund.”
They continued, “Ultimately, the Korea Rural Community Corporation and the government are violating the Farmland Management Fund Act and conducting the project illegally,” and raised their voices, saying, “Substantively, it is a tourism and leisure land reclamation project, violating related laws such as the Environmental Impact Assessment Act.”
They also announced legal responses in cooperation with international environmental organizations.

They stated, “If there is no change in the Saemangeum Jamboree site development project, we will promote a Saemangeum Jamboree boycott campaign together with international environmental organizations,” and warned, “In particular, if the illegal reclamation project is not stopped, legal actions such as administrative lawsuits may be taken.”
