No Effort to Retain Customers... Large Supermarkets Launch Total Discount Offensive This Weekend Too
[Asia Economy Reporter Seungjin Lee] Large discount stores such as Emart, Lotte Mart, and Homeplus are holding weekend discount events every week to escape sluggish sales caused by the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19). This weekend, they are launching an all-out offensive to attract consumers by also offering 'shopping support funds.'
According to the distribution industry on the 20th, Emart will hold a shrimp fair this weekend. All shrimp products, including Malaysian whiteleg shrimp and black tiger shrimp, will be sold at up to 50% discount when using Shinsegae Card. In addition, half-price tuna sashimi, pork belly, and sugar-selected watermelons will be sold at discounted prices.
Lotte Mart will hold the 'Delicious Two Days' event this weekend, offering popular fresh foods and processed foods at up to 50% discounted prices. Through the 'Big Discount' event held on the 6th and 7th, they achieved an 8.7% sales increase compared to the same weekend last year, and will continue with consecutive discount events this weekend.
On the 20th, for one day only, 1st-grade Korean beef sirloin will be sold at 5,500 won per kilogram, limited to 1 kg per person. Cherries and blueberries will be discounted by 6,000 won and 5,000 won respectively for L.POINT members, selling at 3,980 won each. In addition, various ingredients such as U.S. LA galbi and Wando live abalone will be sold at discounted prices.
Homeplus will offer red summer fruits at affordable prices from the 18th to the 24th. Watermelons from famous domestic production areas such as Gochang, Eumseong, and Jincheon, high-sugar-content Kkamang honey watermelons, jujube cherry tomatoes, flat peaches, and plums will be offered at low prices.
Lotte Mart and Emart will also provide shopping support funds this weekend. Starting from the 18th, Lotte Mart will offer shopping support coupon books worth 10 billion won to support consumer life. L.POINT members can get a 3,000 won discount when purchasing over 50,000 won on weekdays and a 5,000 won discount when purchasing over 80,000 won on weekends.
Emart will give gift certificates worth up to 10,000 won regardless of payment method at all stores. Customers who purchase over 100,000 won during the event period will receive a 5,000 won gift certificate, and those who purchase over 200,000 won will receive a 10,000 won gift certificate. The total amount of gift certificates to be distributed is expected to reach 3 billion won.
Additionally, Emart is starting the 4th 'eward' event. Target products include wireless vacuum cleaners, skin care devices, clothing care devices, and air conditioners. The event will be held for the first 1,500 customers at 129 Emart stores nationwide with electronics stores (including Electromart) and 7 Electromart stores located outside Emart.
