Samsung Launches Relay Donations to India Amid Rising COVID-19 Impact
[Asia Economy Reporter Changhwan Lee] Samsung continues to donate funds and medical supplies to India, where the damage from the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) is rapidly increasing.
According to related industries on the 19th, Samsung India Corporation donated 20 million rupees (approximately 317 million KRW) on the 17th to the Uttar Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (UPSDMA) in India as a COVID-19 prevention fund.
Along with the donation, Samsung delivered 10,000 masks and 6,000 personal protective equipment (PPE) kits to local hospitals to prevent COVID-19. The PPE kits included gowns, masks, gloves, eye protection, hood caps, and shoe covers for medical staff. Additionally, about 300 air purifiers and infrared thermometers were supplied to improve air quality in medical facilities.
Earlier in April, Samsung had allocated 200 million rupees (approximately 3.2 billion KRW) as a COVID-19 disaster relief fund to the Indian government and supported various medical equipment. Samsung’s additional support is interpreted as a response to the worsening COVID-19 situation in India.
According to the Indian government, as of the 17th, the cumulative COVID-19 death toll in India reached 11,903, with daily deaths recently increasing from a minimum of several hundred to as many as 2,000. Confirmed cases are also rising by more than 10,000 per day, setting new records. It is pointed out that the lifting of lockdown measures, which the Indian government had enforced for over two months to curb the spread of COVID-19, has led to a significant increase in confirmed cases and deaths.
India being a key production base and consumer market for Samsung Electronics is also a background for Samsung’s continued large-scale donations. Samsung Electronics established and operates a large mobile phone manufacturing plant in Noida, Uttar Pradesh, India, in 2018. It is the world’s largest single mobile phone factory for Samsung Electronics.
