Lecture on the 'Plastic Earth' Caused by COVID-19
[Asia Economy Reporter Junho Hwang] An event will be held to share with children the issue of the significant increase in plastic usage, such as disposable plastic tableware, due to the spread of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19), and to raise awareness.
The Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology will start an online live special lecture titled "The Plastic Earth Brought by COVID-19" from 3 PM on the 24th. This session aims to provide a scientific understanding of the global problem of increased plastic usage caused by COVID-19.
Lectures will include "The Path to a Less Inconvenient Coexistence with Plastic" (Dr. Chungmin Ryu, Director of the Infectious Disease Research Center), "Why Plastic Went to the Ocean" (Dr. Seju Kim, Senior Researcher at the Genome Editing Research Center, and Dr. Jinyoung Jung, Principal Researcher at the Environmental Disease Research Center), and "Plastic-Degrading Fungus: Who Are You?" (Dr. Mikyung Lee, Senior Researcher at the Biological Resources Center).

Director Jangseong Kim of the Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology stated, "The institute is conducting various research projects aimed at solving public life issues in the bio field, such as fine dust, infectious diseases, and plastic problems," and added, "Through this online live special lecture, we hope to provide the public with a better understanding of topics such as the development of plastic degradation technology and biodegradable bioplastics that the institute is pursuing."
