Seoul City Holds Online Forum on Safety Innovation Measures for Construction Sites
[Asia Economy Reporter Onyu Lim] The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced on the 10th that it will hold an online discussion forum on the "Construction Site Safety Innovation Measures" at 3 p.m. on the 11th to prevent safety accidents at construction sites.
Although the city is promoting various institutional improvements and measures to prevent recurring safety accidents at construction sites, more than half of industrial accident fatalities still occur at construction sites, with falls accounting for 60% of these incidents.
Accordingly, to establish effective safety measures at construction sites, Seoul City, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, the Seoul Regional Employment and Labor Office, the Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency, and the National Federation of Construction Industry will participate in the discussion forum.
The forum will discuss the following: ① focused management of high-risk vulnerable areas (strengthening public roles in private construction sites, supporting safety facility costs for small-scale private construction sites, securing workers' safety rights and improving working conditions), ② establishing a sustainable safety management foundation (building a cooperative safety management system), and ③ expanding smart construction safety infrastructure and spreading safety culture (research and development of smart safety technologies), aiming to reduce construction site fatalities in Seoul by 50% by 2022.
This forum will be held online as part of social distancing measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19. It will be broadcast live on Seoul City's official YouTube channel and Live Seoul, allowing anyone to watch and participate by commenting.

Kim Hak-jin, Director General of Safety at Seoul City, said, "Although the so-called ‘Kim Yong-gyun Act,’ which strengthens safety regulations at industrial sites, has been enforced since this year, unfortunate accidents continue to occur. Therefore, various efforts are needed to prioritize workers' safety through worker-centered policies and to raise safety awareness." He added, "We hope that diverse opinions on construction site safety measures will emerge at this forum, and we ask for the public's interest and participation."
