On the 2nd at 10:30 a.m., Ulsan City held the "Next-Generation Intelligent Transportation System (C-ITS) Demonstration Project Report Meeting" in the situation room on the 7th floor of the main building, officially launching the project.
The report meeting was attended by Ulsan City, the project implementing company KT Consortium, the Korea Intelligent Transportation System Association managing the project, the Korea Research Institute for Human Settlements, and the supervision team. It included reports and Q&A sessions on the background, project overview, and direction of the next-generation intelligent transportation system.
Last year, Ulsan City applied for the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport’s "Next-Generation Intelligent Transportation System Demonstration Project," which was announced to strengthen traffic safety and realize autonomous cooperative driving, and was selected as the final project operator.
This transportation system is a system that exchanges real-time information about various traffic conditions around vehicles in motion with sensors installed on the roads.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport promoted the "Next-Generation Intelligent Transportation System Pilot Project" between Daejeon and Sejong, and as local government demonstration projects, Seoul and Jeju have been followed by Ulsan and Gwangju moving forward in earnest.
Ulsan is promoting the project with a total budget of 28 billion KRW (15 billion KRW national funds, 13 billion KRW local funds) from December last year to December 2021.
The application sections of this project cover 142.6 km of major urban roads including Sanup-ro, Auto Valley-ro, Samsan-ro, and Munsu-ro, building next-generation intelligent transportation system infrastructure and providing traffic safety services.
This project is also linked to the "Autonomous Driving Smart Road Construction," aiming to establish an autonomous driving-based intelligent road throughout Ulsan City.
The city will first equip 1,300 cargo trucks, which have a high accident rate, with next-generation intelligent transportation system terminals to provide drivers with road conditions, traffic information, and hazard information.
While the existing Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) collected, processed, and transmitted information, the next-generation intelligent transportation system is an advanced technology that actively responds by exchanging real-time information between vehicle-to-vehicle, vehicle-to-road, vehicle-to-facility, and vehicle-to-pedestrian.
