Lee Jun-seok: "Kim Jong-in's Emergency Committee Unavoidable... No One Fits the 'Self-Reliance Theory'"
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] Lee Jun-seok, Supreme Council Member of the Future United Party, pointed out that regarding the inevitability of the 'Kim Jong-in Emergency Response Committee (ERC)' and the rising 'self-strengthening theory' within the party, "There is no figure that the public would say, 'That person is good enough' when they hear about it."
On the 25th, Lee appeared on KBS Radio's 'Kim Kyung-rae's Strongest Current Affairs' and said, "For the self-strengthening theory to work, there should be a name that the public would immediately recognize and say, 'Ah, yes, that person is enough for self-strengthening,' but no one can actually name such a person," expressing this view.
He raised skepticism, saying, "From the standpoint that party leadership and presidential candidacy should be separated, anyone classified as a presidential candidate can do it," but added, "The moment one person rises, the others will almost attack at an autoimmune level."
The 'Kim Jong-in ERC' is expected to attract a large number of people in their 30s and 40s and introduce policies with a strong progressive hue. Lee, who is in his 30s, is also mentioned as a candidate for the emergency committee member. Regarding this, Lee said, "There is currently no one in the conservative party to handle practical work," and added, "Rather than joining as an emergency committee member, I am thinking of helping with practical work at times when I can assist the party."
He continued, "Seeing that (former Chief Election Committee Chairman Kim Jong-in) frequently mentions the basic income system, I think there might be a proactive statement on basic income," adding, "Depending on whether it is conservative or progressive, different versions of basic income may emerge."
Some criticize this as a 'left turn.' Lee responded, "It can be called a left turn, but since we are moving closer to a two-party system, this is a process to set a standard in the middle," and said, "After the impeachment, we were at the far right end of the field holding a standard and aligning left and right, so the spectrum itself was not wide."
The United Party set the term of the 'Kim Jong-in ERC' until next year's by-elections through a workshop for elected members. Lee commented on this, "If things don't go well before then, they will be pulled down, but if it goes well, they might be allowed to continue," and added, "Since a presidential candidate must be selected soon regardless of who is elected as party leader, the party convention does not have much significance."
