Xi Jinping Calls for International Solidarity and Cooperation in COVID-19 Response
[Asia Economy Beijing=Special Correspondent Park Sun-mi] As the United States intensifies its attacks blaming China for the spread of COVID-19 ahead of the largest political event in China, the Two Sessions, Chinese President Xi Jinping has called on neighboring countries to strengthen solidarity.
On the 21st, the People's Daily featured on its front page President Xi's phone conversations the previous day with Win Myint, President of Myanmar, and Sheikh Hasina, Prime Minister of Bangladesh, regarding COVID-19 issues.
In the call with President Win Myint, President Xi said, "China has already delivered various COVID-19 prevention supplies to Myanmar and dispatched two medical expert teams to work shoulder to shoulder with Myanmar's medical staff in responding to COVID-19," adding, "This well demonstrates the spirit of a community with a shared future, with the peoples of both countries overcoming difficulties together in the same boat." He further stated, "Marking the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations this year, China and Myanmar hope to strengthen cooperation amid the COVID-19 situation and achieve the outcomes discussed during my visit to Myanmar in January this year."
He also stated, "China wishes to work with Myanmar and the international community to uphold international fairness, justice, and fundamental international norms, and support the World Health Organization (WHO) in exercising leadership to safeguard global public health."
President Xi also emphasized the necessity of international cooperation in responding to COVID-19 during his phone call with Prime Minister Hasina of Bangladesh. He expressed gratitude for Bangladesh's various forms of support to China during its fight against COVID-19, promising, "China will continue to provide firm support and capabilities tailored to Bangladesh's needs to combat COVID-19. We will soon dispatch a medical expert team to Bangladesh."
He added, "China opposes actions that hinder international cooperation in epidemic control," and "China wishes to support the WHO's leading role and promote international cooperation in prevention and control with Bangladesh and the international community to protect global public health and safety." He also emphasized that "China and Bangladesh are traditionally friendly neighbors and important partners."
