Resource Recycling Act Passed by National Assembly... Deposit System for Disposable Cups to Be Introduced from 2022
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Hye-seon] Starting from 2022, customers will be able to receive a deposit refund when returning disposable cups used at coffee shops, fast food outlets, and other establishments.
On the 20th, the Ministry of Environment announced that four environmental bills, including the "Act on the Promotion of Saving and Recycling Resources" (Resource Recycling Act), passed the plenary session. The amendment to the Resource Recycling Act centers on introducing a "disposable cup deposit system" similar to the "empty container deposit system" for disposable cups.

Once the system is implemented, sellers will include a government-set deposit in the product price. Consumers will receive a full refund of the deposit when they return the disposable cups. The deposit amount will be determined by the Ministry of Environment through ministerial ordinances, considering factors such as the manufacturing cost of the cups and policy needs.
