The United States Golf Association (USGA) announced on the 19th (Korean time) that "there will be no qualifying rounds this year." The US Open, originally scheduled to begin on June 18, was already postponed to September 17 due to the recent spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in the United States. The venue remains Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, New York. The Associated Press noted that this is the "first time since 1924" and added that "there was no explanation on how the field of players will be filled."

The US Open was established in 1895, and the qualifying system was introduced in 1924. Among the 156 players who participate, about 70 secure their spots through qualifiers held worldwide, including in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Japan. Last year, 73 players qualified this way, and in 2018, 74 did. This is why qualifying is considered a core value. In fact, Michael Campbell (New Zealand) in 2005 and Lucas Glover (United States) in 2009 both went through qualifying rounds and went on to win, causing a stir.
