Korea-Germany Cooperation on Renewable Energy and Nuclear Decommissioning... Annual Director-Level Committee Meetings Held
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bo-kyung] South Korea and Germany are joining forces to advance energy transition policies such as renewable energy, eco-friendly technologies, and nuclear power plant decommissioning.
Ju Young-jun, Director General of the Energy Resources Office at the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, and Thorsten Herdan, Director General of the Energy Policy Office at the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, signed the "Korea-Germany Energy Future Cooperation Roadmap" through a video conference on the 12th.
This roadmap is a follow-up measure to concretize the Korea-Germany Joint Declaration of Intent on Energy Transition Cooperation, which was signed between the ministers of the two countries in December last year.
Originally, the signing was scheduled to take place at the Berlin Energy Transition Dialogue (BETD) at the end of March, but due to the cancellation of the event caused by the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19), it was conducted via video conference.
According to the roadmap, the two countries will hold the Korea-Germany Energy Transition Cooperation Committee (at the director-general level) annually and operate three working subcommittees under it focusing on energy transition, new green energy technologies, and nuclear power plant decommissioning. In addition to government and public institutions, representatives from industry, academia, research institutes, and experts will participate in the cooperation committee and working subcommittees.
They also pledged to hold the "Korea-Germany Energy Day" alternately each year in both countries and to strengthen energy transition cooperation between the two nations through high-level participation in international energy events hosted by each country.
