People Party: "President Moon's Speech Lacks Midterm Evaluation of State Affairs Management, Regrettable"
"Evaluation Needed on Whether the Government Had Any Responsibility in the Economic Emergency Situation"
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Chun-han] On the 10th, the People’s Party criticized President Moon Jae-in’s special speech on the 3rd anniversary of his inauguration, saying, “It is regrettable that there was no mid-term evaluation covering the overall state administration,” and emphasized, “A thorough evaluation is absolutely necessary to determine whether the Moon Jae-in administration bears any responsibility, even up to the economic wartime situation.”
In a commentary on the same day, Ahn Hye-jin, spokesperson for the People’s Party, said, “Since this economic crisis is a compounded crisis caused by the failures of existing economic policies and the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak, it should serve as an opportunity to change the existing economic paradigm and create a fair and solid economic structure through a thorough review of the current government’s economic policies.”
Regarding the nationwide employment insurance and the national employment support system, she stated, “We positively evaluate President Moon’s will to establish a social safety net,” but added, “However, employment insurance is voluntary, so it does not function as social insurance in reality. There are many practical issues to consider, such as the difficulty in assessing the income of self-employed individuals and, especially, how to secure funding.”
She continued, “The Moon Jae-in administration should take a sincere approach to nationwide employment insurance that all citizens agree on, going through a public discourse process involving active consultations with the National Assembly and the public, with the mindset of literally laying the foundation.”
Spokesperson Ahn also expressed regret that “there was no mention at all of structural reform, labor reform, public reform, or pension reform for new economic restructuring in this national address,” criticizing, “This is evidence that the current government is avoiding the essence of the crisis.”
