Seoul Museum of Art Selected Emerging Artist, Jo Kyungjae Solo Exhibition 'Yeoja Headquarters'
[Asia Economy Reporter Byunghee Park] The Seoul Museum of Art (SeMA) will present the solo exhibition "Yeoja Headquarters" by artist Jo Kyungjae at SeMA Warehouse on the 27th.
This is the first exhibition introduced through the Seoul Museum of Art's 2020 "Emerging Artist Exhibition Support Program." The Emerging Artist Exhibition Support Program is a program that Seoul Museum of Art has operated since 2008 to support talented emerging artists by providing funding for materials, venue rental fees, promotion costs, and consulting to enable them to hold exhibitions. This year, nine curators and artists were selected to hold exhibitions sequentially until August at SeMA Warehouse and SeMA Bunker.
The exhibition title "Yeoja Headquarters" originates from the record of the hometown house in Yeoja-dong, Jinhae City, where artist Jo Kyungjae was born and lived until elementary school. The artist reimagines the red brick masonry building of SeMA Warehouse (formerly the reagent warehouse of the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) as a labyrinthine space of childhood attics, basements, and rooftops, expressing the exploratory gaze of childhood imagining secret conspiracies through spatial installation.
With low doors that require visitors to bend down to pass through, narrow corridors, precarious stairs, and rough finishes, the artist intentionally designed the exhibition space to make visitors experience discomfort.
