Domestic Pro Sports Spectators Spent an Average of 32,000 Won Per Person
Korea Professional Sports Association Publishes 2019 Professional Sports Spectator Trend Survey Report
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Heung-soon] Last year, domestic professional sports spectators spent an average of 32,000 KRW per person to watch games.
According to the "2019 Professional Sports Spectator Trend Survey Report" announced on the 8th by the Korea Professional Sports Association, which surveyed 34,978 spectators across nine leagues in five domestic professional sports categories including soccer, baseball, basketball, volleyball, and golf, the average expenditure per spectator last year was 32,075 KRW, similar to 2018 (average 32,100 KRW).
By sport, professional baseball had the highest expenditure at 39,900 KRW. This was followed by men's professional basketball (29,900 KRW), professional soccer (29,100 KRW), women's professional volleyball (27,000 KRW), men's professional volleyball (26,300 KRW), and women's professional basketball (22,900 KRW). Compared to 2018, professional baseball saw a decrease of about 5,000 KRW in per spectator spending, while all other sports experienced increases.
Professional soccer (43.8%) and women's professional basketball (47.5%) had higher proportions of spectators visiting with family, whereas men's professional basketball (13.9%) and professional baseball (12.6%) had higher proportions of spectators visiting with partners compared to other sports. The largest age group among spectators was those in their 20s, accounting for 28.9%. Looking at the gender and age trends over the past three years, the proportion of female spectators increased steadily from 38.7% in 2017 to 43.4% in 2019.
The professional sports spectator trend survey, sponsored by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, was conducted face-to-face from August to December last year at 61 domestic professional sports league teams and 10 men's and women's golf tournaments. The sample error is ±0.55%p for team sports and ±1.80%p for individual sports, with a 95% confidence level.
