153 Public Institutions in Innovation Cities to Continue "Full Effort for Local Economic Revitalization" This Year
10 Innovative City Public Institutions Plan Over 8,700 Projects
Including Local Talent Recruitment, Resident Support, and Regional Industry Development
[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Jiwon] The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced on the 24th that 153 public institutions relocated to innovation cities have established and finalized their regional development plans for this year. The government expects that these plans will increase job opportunities for local talent and revitalize the regional economy.
According to the Ministry of Land, public institutions are planning a total of 8,717 projects for regional development in 10 innovation cities, focusing on fostering local industries, hiring local talent, supporting residents, and prioritizing the purchase of local goods.
First, the Housing and Urban Guarantee Corporation (HUG), which relocated to Busan Innovation City, is establishing a Social Economy Support Fund (BEFF) of 1.04 billion KRW to support the establishment and activities of social economy enterprises. Korea Southern Power is promoting a smart factory construction support project to advance the production systems of small and medium-sized enterprises, and the Korean Film Council is operating a pilot youth film education school at Busan Yeongdo Elementary School.
Public institutions located in Daegu Innovation City are carrying out various regional contribution projects to support local residents. Korea Gas Corporation provides construction technology education to low-income residents such as homeless people and those living in small rooms, offering opportunities for employment in related jobs. The National Information Society Agency is installing an additional 1,024 public Wi-Fi units on city buses to reduce local residents' household communication expenses, and the Korea Private School Promotion Foundation is collaborating with four schools in the Daegu area to build four happy dormitories accommodating about 3,000 people by 2022.
In Gwangju-Jeonnam Innovation City, Korea Electric Power Corporation is investing 5.7 billion KRW to build electric bus charging infrastructure (12 locations) in Gwangju, and Korea Plant Service & Engineering (KPS) supports costs incurred for local partner companies to obtain safety and health management system certification. In Ulsan Innovation City, the Korea Workers' Compensation and Welfare Service has decided to directly establish a government-supported public workplace daycare center to support employees who relocated to the innovation city without government assistance.

View original imageGangwon Innovation City has focused on regional development projects that align with its characteristics as a tourist destination. The Korea Tourism Organization is working to revitalize local tourism by developing winter tourism products for inbound tourists using facilities from the Pyeongchang Olympics. The Korea National Park Service plans to operate electric shuttle buses in the Chiaksan Guryong area to provide convenience for village residents, the elderly, and visitors.
Located in Jeonbuk Innovation City, the Publishing Culture Industry Promotion Agency is promoting the activation of the local publishing industry by supporting the creation, distribution, and promotion of local publishing content. The Korea Land and Geospatial Informatix Corporation conducts year-round equipment operation training, including surveying equipment, for students from local universities such as Jeonbuk National University.
In Gyeongbuk Innovation City, the Korea Transportation Safety Authority has committed to actively participating in the construction of an advanced vehicle inspection research center, the establishment of a drone-exclusive flight field, and the development of a licensing examination center, while in Gyeongnam Innovation City, the Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH) plans to prioritize purchasing construction supplies produced by small and medium-sized enterprises located in the Gyeongnam region (approximately 20 billion KRW in scale).
Relocated to Jeju Innovation City, the Government Employees Pension Service leases and utilizes local lodging facilities and restaurants to provide retirement support education for government employees.
Joo Hyun-jong, Deputy Director of the Innovation City Development Promotion Team at the Ministry of Land, said, "We will actively promote institutional and financial support measures to ensure that the regional development plans of relocated public institutions proceed smoothly as originally planned."
