Doosan Infracore Mini Excavator Wins 2020 Red Dot Design Award Main Prize
Doosan Infracore Mini Excavator DX17z-5, Winner of the Grand Prize at the 2020 Red Dot Design Award
[Asia Economy Reporter Ki-min Lee] Doosan Infracore's 1.7-ton class mini excavator model has won the main prize at the '2020 Red Dot Design Award,' one of the world's top three design awards.
Doosan Infracore announced on the 18th that its 1.7-ton class mini excavator model 'DX17z-5' received the main prize in the product design category at the '2020 Red Dot Design Award.' The Red Dot Award is organized by the Design Center of North Rhine-Westphalia in Germany and is considered one of the world's top three design awards alongside Germany's iF Design Award and the United States' IDEA.
The mini excavator 'DX17z-5,' which won the main prize at this year's Red Dot Award, was launched domestically by Doosan Infracore in July last year. It received high praise for visually expressing powerful and agile equipment performance through its dynamic exterior. The DX17z-5 was also recognized for its design excellence as a 'Finalist' at the 2019 Pinup Design Award hosted by the Korea Industrial Designers Association last year.
Doosan Infracore evaluated that the DX17z-5 excels not only in design but also in functionality compared to competing products in the same class. The DX17z-5 has competitive advantages in digging force, swing speed, and working angle, and its minimum equipment width is only 950mm, making it highly useful in confined spaces, according to Doosan Infracore. Additionally, the crawler width, corresponding to the excavator's wheel part, can be expanded up to 1360mm as needed, providing excellent balance maintenance performance during operation.
Lee Dong-wook, Vice President of Doosan Infracore's Technology Center, said, "It is especially meaningful to receive this award because it is difficult to apply differentiated design to smaller equipment," adding, "The DX17z-5 will establish itself as a leading model that newly defines the importance of design along with performance in the mini excavator market."

Meanwhile, according to industry sources, the domestic mini excavator market under 5 tons has grown by more than 15% over the past three years.
