"Citizens Suffered Due to Corona... Petition to Cheong Requests Lawmakers to Return Half Their Salaries"
"From Kind Landlords to Medical Staff and Young Students, Everyone Overcomes Difficult Situations Together"
"Lawmakers Must Also Help the Struggling Nation"
[Asia Economy Reporter Han Seung-gon] A petition has appeared on the Blue House National Petition Board requesting that members of the National Assembly voluntarily return half of their salaries in relation to the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) crisis.
On the 12th, a petition titled "We propose that members of the National Assembly return or reduce their salaries for the citizens facing crisis due to COVID-19" was posted on the Blue House National Petition Board.
The petitioner stated, "I am one of the citizens who are struggling but trying to overcome the difficulties caused by COVID-19," adding, "The livelihoods of corporations, individual business owners, and office workers are all bleak. From kind landlords to medical staff and fundraising by young students, everyone is working together to overcome this difficult situation."
They continued, "So many people are contributing to creating a peaceful Republic of Korea that it cannot be listed one by one, so members of the National Assembly should also help the struggling nation even a little," they argued.
They also questioned, "Citizens elect members of the National Assembly, and members receive salaries from taxpayers' money. Should citizens pay taxes for a National Assembly that does not work?"
They added, "Take this opportunity to repent for past mistakes by voluntarily returning or reducing your salaries," and said, "Citizens have suffered great economic and psychological damage due to this COVID-19 crisis. Members of the National Assembly should think from the citizens' perspective with empathy."
