[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Dae-yeol] As of the 16th, the number of critically ill patients among confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) in South Korea is counted at 59.
Gwak Jin, head of the Patient Management Team at the Central Disease Control Headquarters, stated in a briefing on the same day, "There are 59 critically ill patients and 30 severe patients, making a total of 89 patients at the severe stage or above."
The health authorities classify patients who are on mechanical ventilation or using an extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) device as critically ill. Patients who can breathe on their own but have decreased oxygen saturation requiring oxygen therapy or have a fever of 38.5 degrees Celsius are considered severe. Nearly two months after the first COVID-19 case was reported domestically, the number of confirmed cases and those released from quarantine is increasing, along with a rising trend in severe patients. On the 6th, the number of patients at the severe stage or above was 57, but it has increased by more than 30 over about ten days.
As of midnight on the same day, the total number of confirmed cases in South Korea is 8,236. Among them, 1,137 have been released from quarantine due to recovery or other reasons, and 75 deaths have been reported. The number of deaths may vary depending on the time of data compilation.
