'Seoul's Spring, Playing Hope'... Seoul Spring Chamber Music Festival Opens May 13
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Byung-hee] The Seoul Spring Chamber Music Festival (SSF), a representative classical music festival in Seoul, will be held from May 13 to 24 at Sejong Center for the Performing Arts Sejong Chamber Hall and Seoul Arts Center IBK Chamber Hall.
Starting with the opening performance on the 13th, chamber music concerts with different themes will continue until the 15th at Sejong Center for the Performing Arts Sejong Chamber Hall, and on the 16th and from the 19th to the 24th at Seoul Arts Center IBK Chamber Hall. The beloved "Family Concert," known for its affordable ticket prices, will be held on the 16th at Lotte Concert Hall, and on the 17th, a "Salon Concert" for SSF sponsors, called Friends, will take place at the Yoon Bo-seon Old House.
SSF began in 2006 and is celebrating its 15th edition this year. The theme of this year's SSF is "Ode to Joy." "Ode to Joy" (German: Ode "An die Freude") is a poem written in 1785 by German poet Friedrich Schiller. An ode is a form of lyrical poetry with free rhythm and structure. Schiller's poem, which praises the harmony and brotherhood of all humanity, became the lyrics for the fourth movement of Beethoven's Symphony No. 9, completed in 1824, making it the most famous ode in the world.
In commemoration of Beethoven's 250th birthday, it carries the meaning of encouraging the world today to overcome all tragic events, disasters, suffering, diseases, and wars together.
SSF has featured Beethoven's music several times in the past. In 2009, under the theme "B4+," the entire set of Beethoven's string quartets was performed, and in 2018, the complete Beethoven piano trios were played. This year, instead of focusing on a specific area, a wide range of Beethoven chamber music repertoire across various genres will be generously performed. To this end, 58 performers active both domestically and internationally are preparing the stage.
Special guests preparing the stage include guitarist David Russell, nicknamed "The Magic Hand," Vadim Kolodenko, winner of the Van Cliburn Competition, violinist Alena Baeva, winner of the Wieniawski Competition, Bj?rn Lehmann, professor at the Berlin University of the Arts, Steven Doan, professor at the Eastman School of Music, and mime artist Ireneusz Krosny, known for collaborations with classical musicians. Promising Korean artists also participate annually, with pianist Kim Dasol appearing this year.
