Renault Samsung and Korea GM Labor Unions Resume Wage Negotiations but...
[Asia Economy Reporter Kiho Sung] Renault Samsung Motors and Korea GM labor and management resumed wage negotiations separately on the afternoon of the 12th. Both companies have just launched new cars that are crucial to their fate, making smooth labor-management relations more important than anything else.
The most attention is focused on Renault Samsung Motors. The XM3, released on the 9th, has gained great popularity by surpassing 10,000 units sold in the shortest time since the company's founding, but labor-management conflicts related to wage negotiations that have continued since last year remain unresolved. Moreover, after the recent announcement by the labor union executive committee of their intention to join the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU), voices of opposition have emerged internally, showing signs of spreading into a 'labor-labor (노노) conflict.'
The key issue in Renault Samsung Motors' wage negotiations is the wage compensation for union members who participated in the previous strike. The union has shown a tough stance, discussing the possibility of another strike after the company refused to accept the establishment of a 'labor-management coexistence fund' to compensate for the reduced wages of striking union members. However, some union members who did not participate in the strike are opposing the executive committee's claims, making it difficult to find a solution to the situation.
Korea GM's situation is better than Renault Samsung Motors, but the good performance of the recently launched Trailblazer is ironically a concern. The union may demand a larger wage increase based on increased sales. Before the wage negotiations, the union pressured CEO Kaher Kazem by stating, "Labor and management commonly agree on the prompt conclusion of wage negotiations," and added, "The issue is CEO Kazem's change in attitude; he must approach the negotiations with a responsible and problem-solving mindset."
There are concerns that Korea GM's wage negotiations could also be prolonged. Negotiations have just begun, and there is a clear difference in positions between labor and management regarding the recent issues of direct maintenance and the closure of the Changwon and Jeju logistics centers. Labor and management are currently conducting special labor-management consultations related to the closure plans of direct maintenance and logistics centers.
