Mercedes-AMG Petronas, Challenges 7th Consecutive Double Championship with New F1 Machine
[Asia Economy Reporter Kiho Sung] As the 2020 Formula One (F1) World Championship officially kicks off with the Australian Grand Prix on the 13th, the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport team, celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2020, unveiled its new machine, the ‘Mercedes-AMG F1 W11 EQ Performance,’ on the 12th.
The 11th Silver Arrow, the ‘EQ Performance,’ symbolizes the next-generation Mercedes-AMG Performance hybrid model. On February 14th, Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas completed the first run with the Mercedes-AMG F1 W11 EQ Performance at the Silverstone International Circuit in the UK.
The Mercedes-AMG W11 EQ Performance underwent inspection of over 100,000 parts and went through the process of manufacturing and testing more than 8,000 parts. Through extensive research and testing, it has evolved further from the previous generation machine. The architectural changes focused on improving aerodynamic elements compared to the previous model.
The year 2020 is also a significant year marking the 10th anniversary since Mercedes-Benz returned to Formula One racing as the ‘Mercedes-AMG Petronas Team.’ Last year, the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport team secured the final victory in both the 2019 F1 season World Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championships, achieving a double championship for six consecutive years since 2014, continuing an unparalleled success story in motorsports. In particular, this season’s team driver Lewis Hamilton is challenging the legendary driver Michael Schumacher’s record of seven World Championship titles.

Meanwhile, Mercedes-Benz is participating for the first time in the electric car racing series, the 2019-20 ABB FIA Formula E Championship. The Mercedes-Benz EQ Formula E team currently ranks 5th in the team standings, with team drivers Stoffel Vandoorne and Nick de Vries holding 6th and 13th positions respectively, continuing their strong performance.
