Yang Ju-ung, Hyundai Motor Researcher, and Kim Byung-yeol, ATEKAP Director, Receive Korea Engineer Award
[Asia Economy Reporter Seulgina Jo] Yang Ju-woong, a senior researcher at Hyundai Motor Company, and Kim Byung-yeol, a manager at ATEK AP, were awarded the Korea Engineer Award in March 2020.
According to the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Korea Industrial Technology Association on the 9th, Senior Researcher Yang, selected as the March awardee, was recognized for his contribution to the development and commercialization of Korea's first remote smart parking, rear cross-traffic collision avoidance assist system, and rear side monitor system, thereby advancing the domestic automobile industry.
Existing parking assist systems only allowed automatic steering control while the driver was inside the vehicle. In response, Senior Researcher Yang developed a remote smart parking assist system using a smart key, elevating parking convenience technology to the next level and laying the groundwork for future development of unmanned valet parking technology at autonomous driving level 3 or higher. Additionally, he contributed to the advancement of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) by developing and commercializing Korea's first rear cross-traffic collision avoidance assist and rear side monitor systems.
Kim Byung-yeol, manager at ATEK AP, was recognized for his contribution to innovation in financial automation through the development of a smart automated teller machine (Smart ATM) optimized for the domestic financial environment, and was selected as the awardee from a small and medium-sized enterprise. As demand for non-face-to-face financial services increased in the financial sector, Manager Kim has participated in the development of Smart ATMs required by Busan Bank starting in 2016, followed by the Korea Post, Industrial Bank of Korea, and NongHyup Bank.
Based on bio-authentication, video consultation functions, advanced voice recognition, and artificial intelligence technologies, the Smart ATM has greatly contributed to the commercialization of digital branch Smart ATM products for the Fourth Industrial Revolution era by automating various banking tasks that were previously only performed at counters, including cash transactions, account opening, and issuance of cards and bankbooks.
The ‘Korea Engineer Award’ is presented monthly to one engineer each from large and small-to-medium enterprises to encourage technological innovation in industrial sites and foster a culture that values engineers. Awardees receive the Minister of Science and ICT Award and a prize of 7 million KRW.
