Heo Seok, Suncheon Mayor, Expresses Deep Concern with Citizens over National Assembly Electoral District Delimitation
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Kim Chunsu] Heo Seok, Mayor of Suncheon, issued a statement on the 5th regarding the ongoing discussions at the National Assembly and the Central Election Commission about the delineation of electoral districts for the upcoming April 15 National Assembly general election.
In his statement, Mayor Heo expressed, "I deeply regret that the confirmation of electoral districts has not been finalized even with only 40 days left until the voting day, causing increased confusion among prospective candidates and the public."
He further emphasized, "Although the population, which serves as the basis for delineating National Assembly electoral districts, exceeds the upper limit in the case of Suncheon, necessitating a division, the National Assembly's decision to first consider dividing the district within a day and then deciding not to divide it raises serious concerns among citizens."

He added, "This contradicts the Constitutional Court's ruling that population equality must be the foremost consideration in electoral district delineation. In particular, we firmly oppose, along with 280,000 citizens, any attempt to not split Suncheon's National Assembly electoral district into two and instead detach some of Suncheon's eup, myeon, and dong areas to incorporate them into other electoral districts, despite exceeding the population upper limit for district delineation."
