[Asia Economy Reporter Junho Hwang] A method for measuring the safety of nanomaterials used in daily life, jointly developed by South Korea and the United States, has been approved as an international standard.

The Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science (KRISS) announced on the 3rd that the "Photocatalytic Activity Measurement Method for Nanomaterials," jointly proposed by the Nano Safety Technology Support Center and the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), has been adopted as an international nanotechnology standard (ISO/TC 229).

This measurement method is a standardized analytical technique that allows the measurement of photocatalytic activity of nanomaterials dispersed in water. Although there were existing standard measurement methods, they could not be directly applied to nanomaterials.

Using this measurement method, substances such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, which are widely used in daily life and require safety verification, can be measured. Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are substances commonly used in cosmetics like sunscreens and in industrial settings.

Lee Taegul, Vice President of KRISS, said, "This is a meaningful result obtained through standardized measurement technology necessary for nano safety evaluation and extensive international cooperation," adding, "Nanomaterials are essential in various industries and throughout society, but there are safety concerns. Therefore, we plan to establish a nationwide nano safety network so that everyone can feel secure."

Meanwhile, the Nano Safety Technology Support Center plans to conduct follow-up research more closely related to daily life, such as measuring intracellular toxicity caused by the photocatalytic activity of nanomaterials and standardizing measurement technologies for nanoparticle size in liquids.
