Hampyeong Fire Station Urges Prevention of Winter Wildfire Fires
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Yoon Jamin] The Hampyeong Fire Station in Jeonnam (Chief Im Donghyun) has urged residents to be cautious regarding winter wildfires (forest fires).
According to the Hampyeong Fire Station on the 18th, a total of 304 wildfires occurred in Jeonnam last year.
Carelessness during the burning of rice paddies, field edges, or agricultural waste can cause the fire to spread to nearby mountains or residential areas, leading to property damage and casualties.
Starting from May 7, according to the amendment of Article 3 (Reporting of Fire Ignition, etc.) of the Jeonnam Fire Prevention Ordinance, when lighting fires near rice paddies or fields, one must verbally report the location, time, and purpose in advance to the fire headquarters or the local fire station. If a fire truck is dispatched without prior notification, a fine of 200,000 KRW will be imposed.

A representative of the Hampyeong Fire Station stated, “Burning rice paddies and fields is not very effective for pest control, and burning field edges and trash accounts for more than 30% of wildfires (mountain fires). We ask residents to refrain from lighting fires near rice paddies and fields to prevent fires, and in unavoidable cases, to report in advance either verbally (by phone) or in writing (by fax) to the fire station.”
