Jeonnam Province, Full Effort to Prevent Wildfires During Jeongwol Daeboreum
Special Alert Period Designated Until the 9th
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Yoon Jamin] Jeonnam Province (Governor Kim Young-rok) has designated the period until the 9th as the "Jeongwol Daeboreum Special Fire Prevention Alert Period" and is focusing on intensive management.
According to Jeonnam Province on the 7th, this year's Jeongwol Daeboreum (the 8th) is expected to have a very high risk of forest fires nationwide due to the continued dry weather, with outdoor events such as burning the Daljip (moon house) and Jwibulnori (fire spinning) as well as shamanistic rituals to ward off bad luck concentrated during this time.
In the past five years (2015?2019), four forest fires occurred during the Jeongwol Daeboreum period, resulting in the loss of 0.44 hectares of forest, with 25% caused by open burning and 25% by negligence of visitors to the mountains.
Accordingly, 1,100 specialized fire prevention and suppression personnel have been deployed to 4,690 vulnerable forest fire areas to strengthen patrol activities, and 13 firefighting helicopters (3 from the Korea Forest Service, 8 leased, and 2 from the fire department) have been stationed to minimize forest damage caused by fires.
Additionally, for major event sites such as the Jeongwol Daeboreum Daljip burning and sky lantern flying, as well as shamanistic ritual sites, local administrative organizations at the eup, myeon, and dong levels have designated responsible officials for each event site, and the working hours of forest fire monitoring personnel will be extended.
Along with this, during the Jeongwol Daeboreum holiday period, joint inspections by agricultural, environmental, and forestry departments will be conducted targeting 22 cities and counties including Mokpo City to manage the seasonal fine dust control system and prevent illegal burning in rural areas.
