Eunpyeong-gu Lifelong Learning Center 2020 Academic Year Neulbaeum School Learner Recruitment
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Eunpyeong-gu (Mayor Kim Mi-kyung) and Eunpyeong-gu Lifelong Learning Center (Director Lee Chang-sik) are continuously recruiting learners for the 2020 school year Neulbaeum School, targeting adults who need Korean literacy and everyday literacy education.
The Eunpyeong-gu Lifelong Learning Center has been operating the adult literacy education program "Neulbaeum School" since 2011, starting with an unaccredited elementary course. In 2015, it was designated as an elementary education accreditation institution by the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education, and in 2016 as a secondary education accreditation institution.
Neulbaeum School currently runs over 30 classes including elementary, secondary, and everyday literacy courses, and has produced a total of about 900 learners to date. In recognition of its contribution to revitalizing literacy education in Eunpyeong-gu, the Lifelong Learning Center received the Seoul Mayor’s Commendation for ‘Contribution to Literacy Education Revitalization’ at the 2019 Literacy Education Performance Sharing Meeting hosted by Seoul City.
Encouraged by the award, the center plans to actively support learners in enhancing their literacy skills and developing mature and confident civic awareness through not only Korean language classes but also everyday literacy education using smartphones, health classes, and community exploration. For the 2020 school year, Neulbaeum School will operate level-tailored education with 4 elementary classes and 4 secondary classes. All course materials and tuition fees are free of charge.
Notable programs for the 2020 school year include the ‘Reading the World Class,’ which has been newly revised to add an elementary qualification exam preparation curriculum to the existing everyday functional literacy education, and the newly established ‘Supplementary Class’ for basic English education to introduce the secondary course.
Additionally, teacher research groups studying effective teaching methods will be supported to foster a sense of belonging among Neulbaeum School teachers and increase learner satisfaction with classes.
Special programs such as ‘Community Exploration,’ which enhances understanding of the local community, and ‘Physical Fitness Health Class,’ which facilitates interaction and communication across various generations, will also be operated.
A representative of Neulbaeum School stated, “We will strive to build a lifelong learning foundation so that all residents of Eunpyeong can live as healthy and autonomous citizens equipped not only with Korean literacy but also with everyday life skills and understanding and experience of the local community.”
