Jinju City announced on the 28th that Chokseokru, which was a national treasure before being completely burned down during the Korean War, and Yeongnam Pojeongsa Gate, the gateway of Gyeongsang Ubyeongyeong built in 1618 (the 10th year of King Gwanghaegun), were upgraded to tangible cultural properties of Gyeongnam Province after the first Architectural Cultural Heritage Committee review by Gyeongnam Province in 2020.
Chokseokru is a pavilion located on a cliff adjacent to the Namgang River and is also called Jangwonru or Namjangdae.
Chokseokru, one of Korea's three great pavilions, was originally built in 1241 (the 28th year of King Gojong of Goryeo) and has undergone several repairs. It was completely destroyed by fire during the Korean War in 1950 and was rebuilt in 1960 with donations from citizens and national and provincial funds.
Chokseokru has been highly evaluated not only for the beauty and historicity of traditional Korean architecture but also because master craftsmen restored it as close to the original as possible using traditional methods during its reconstruction.
Yeongnam Pojeongsa Gate served as the main gate of the Jinju fortress’s governor’s office during the Joseon Dynasty and was newly constructed in 1618 by Byeongsa Nam Ihung, remaining to this day.
It is the only remaining government office building among the old Gyeongsang Ubyeongyeong government buildings, which gives it high value as an architectural cultural heritage.
