'Tracking Jeon Du-hwan' Im Han-sol "Leaving Justice Party to Run in General Election"
[Asia Economy Reporter Kang Nahum] Im Hansol, the vice representative of the Justice Party who has been tracking the recent activities of Jeon Du-hwan, such as 'golf rounding' and the '12·12 Incident celebration luncheon,' announced his resignation from the party on the 17th. This was because the party leadership did not permit Im to run in the general election, citing his position as an elected official (Seodaemun District Council member).
At a press conference held at the National Assembly on the same day, Vice Representative Im declared his resignation, saying, "I earnestly requested permission to run in the general election several times from Representative Sim Sang-jung, but ultimately did not receive approval."
The Justice Party stipulates that incumbent elected officials must obtain approval from the Executive Committee, i.e., the party leadership, to run for another public office.
Im resigned from his district council position on the 16th, the deadline for public officials to resign in order to run in the general election. On the same day, the Justice Party held an Executive Committee meeting and decided to suspend Im from his position and refer him to the Party Disciplinary Committee, stating that he resigned from his council position without consulting the party. Instead of being allowed to run, he ended up being disciplined by the party.
Vice Representative Im stated, "This year marks the 40th anniversary of the May 18 Democratic Uprising. The task of recovering the vast illegal wealth accumulated by Jeon and his group during the Fifth Republic must be completed while they are still alive," and emphasized his intention to run in the general election, saying, "I consider this mission my calling and seek the authority to accomplish it."
He explained, "One might ask, 'Is tracking Jeon Du-hwan something that can only be done by becoming a member of the National Assembly?' but there is a clear difference in authority. Until now, I have been operating the Jeon Du-hwan tracking team with my personal funds. The statute of limitations for pursuing Jeon is nearing its end, but I lack the authority and capability, and I am facing limitations."
Regarding his electoral district and whether he would join another party, Im said, "I am keeping all possibilities open," and added, "I will decide through consultations with many people about the path and method to proceed."
