Hopeful Laughter Resonates at Hwasun Chonnam National University Hospital
The 19th Pediatric Cancer, Leukemia, and Rare Disease Cure Celebration Successfully Held
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Hwasun Chonnam National University Hospital (Acting Director Shin Myung-geun) was filled with hopeful laughter and applause from pediatric cancer patients, their families, and medical staff.
On the 14th, according to Hwasun Chonnam National University Hospital, the ‘19th Pediatric Cancer, Leukemia, and Rare Disease Cure Celebration’ was recently held in the hospital’s main auditorium.
Acting Director Shin Myung-geun, former Director Kook Hoon of Chonnam National University Children's Hospital (Professor of Pediatrics at Hwasun Chonnam National University Hospital), and Head of Pediatrics Baek Hee-jo personally awarded cure medals to 27 patients that day.
Choi Won-sik, Superintendent of Hwasun Education Support Office; Choi Young-jun, President of the Korea Leukemia Pediatric Cancer Association Gwangju-Jeonnam Branch; and Kim Jeong-ju, Director of Happy Tree, a nonprofit organization connecting love, also attended to congratulate the cured patients and their families.
A (13-year-old) girl, who received a cure medal after treatment for the congenital rare disease ‘Diamond-Blackfan anemia,’ said, “I am grateful to the medical staff and my parents who carefully cared for me and gave me hope for a cure,” adding, “It was even better that I could continue classes at the hospital’s ‘Yeomi Sarang Hospital School.’”
The father of B (13-year-old), a musical prodigy currently hospitalized with ‘acute lymphoblastic leukemia,’ shared his treatment story, adding to the emotional atmosphere.
Acting Director Shin Myung-geun stated, “Every year at the beginning of the new year, we hold a cure celebration for pediatric cancer patients to offer congratulations and new hope,” and added, “We will strive even harder for the happy healing of cancer patients undergoing treatment.”
Meanwhile, since its opening in 2004, Hwasun Chonnam National University Hospital has treated over 900 pediatric patients suffering from cancer, leukemia, and rare incurable diseases. Among them, nearly 600 have been cured.
The hospital operates the Pediatric Cancer Environmental Health Center and the Honam Region Rare Disease Center, dedicating efforts to treatment research as well.

The hospital also runs the ‘Yeomi Sarang Hospital School’ on-site. It teaches patients who cannot attend classes for extended periods due to hospitalization and operates various healing programs.
