[Exclusive] Kang Tae-woong, Seoul City Administrative Deputy Mayor, Receives Request to Run in Yongsan General Election
Deputy Mayor Kang Recently Received and Is Considering Accepting the Democratic Party's Request to Run for Seoul Yongsan in the General Election
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Kang Tae-woong, the 1st Deputy Mayor of Seoul (age 57), is reportedly deliberating repeatedly over whether to run in the 21st general election.
It has been confirmed that Deputy Mayor Kang was offered a candidacy for the Seoul Yongsan National Assembly seat by the Democratic Party of Korea.
The Democratic Party, after Minister of the Interior and Safety Jin Young, the incumbent representative of the Yongsan district, decided not to run in the 21st general election, sought a candidate with a high chance of winning. They proposed candidacy to Deputy Mayor Kang, who graduated from Yongsan High School and Seoul National University, passed the civil service exam, and rose to the highest position for a regular public official, the vice-ministerial level 1st Deputy Mayor of Seoul.
In particular, Deputy Mayor Kang was recommended as a suitable candidate due to his local ties to Yongsan, having attended Yongsan Middle and High Schools.
Moreover, since Yongsan District Mayor Seong Hyeong-hyun, as an incumbent local government head, cannot run in the general election, Deputy Mayor Kang was recommended as the leading candidate.
It has also been confirmed that the Democratic Party’s request for Deputy Mayor Kang to run in Yongsan was reported to Mayor Park Won-soon.
However, Deputy Mayor Kang is said to have been repeatedly deliberating despite the request to run in the general election.
This is reportedly because the path of a politician is new to him as a civil servant, and there is opposition from his family.
Seoul City Hall officials have also heard these rumors, and it is expected that Deputy Mayor Kang will make a decision by the 16th, the deadline for public officials to declare candidacy, whether he decides to run or to give up.
Deputy Mayor Kang passed the 33rd civil service exam, served in positions such as Seoul City’s Public Relations Officer, Administrative Manager, and Planning Officer, was promoted to Grade 3, and held key posts including Policy Planning Officer, Administrative Director, Spokesperson, Head of Economic Promotion Headquarters, and Director of Planning and Coordination Office before taking on the role of 1st Deputy Mayor. He is regarded as the top talent within Seoul City Hall.
