BMW Launches New 1 Series in Korea... 118d Sports Edition Available Online Only
[Asia Economy Reporter Suyeon Woo] BMW Korea officially launched the 3rd generation BMW New 1 Series in Korea on the 8th.
The BMW 1 Series is a premium compact hatchback model that has been a steady seller with over 2 million units sold worldwide since its first introduction in 2004. The newly launched New 1 Series is the first model to adopt a front-wheel-drive system, featuring a more spacious interior and BMW's unique Sheer Driving Pleasure simultaneously.
The BMW New 1 Series released domestically is equipped with a 4-cylinder diesel engine and offers four variants depending on design options: New 118d Joy First Edition, New 118d Sport, New 118d M Sport, and New 118d M Sport First Edition. In particular, the New 118d M Sport First Edition, which features differentiated design and convenience features to express individuality, is sold exclusively as a BMW limited edition model through the 'BMW Shop Online.'
The BMW New 1 Series maximizes sporty appeal with balanced body proportions and sleek lines. Despite adopting a front-wheel-drive system, the front and rear overhangs are set short to complete a stable proportion. The larger front BMW kidney grille is integrated with a single frame, expressing a strong presence, while the sharply angled headlights create a youthful and aggressive impression.
Additionally, BMW’s distinctive design elements such as the Shark Nose and the upward-sloping window line toward the rear emphasize dynamism. The rear features elongated LED rear lights that give a lower and wider impression, and a black diffuser and twin tailpipes add a sporty touch.
The BMW New 1 Series boasts a more spacious interior by adopting a front-wheel-drive platform for the first time. Rear seat knee room has increased by 33mm, and the left-right space of the front and rear seats has increased by 42mm and 13mm respectively. All models released domestically come standard with a panoramic glass roof, providing excellent openness, and the trunk capacity is 380 liters by default, expandable up to 1200 liters by folding down the rear seatbacks in a 40:20:40 split configuration.
The New 1 Series is equipped with a 4-cylinder diesel engine featuring BMW’s efficient EfficientDynamics technology. It delivers a maximum output of 150 horsepower and a peak torque of 35.69 kg.m, combined with an optimized Steptronic 8-speed automatic transmission for efficient driving. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h takes 8.4 seconds, with a top speed of 214 km/h. The combined fuel efficiency is 14.3 km/l, and CO2 emissions are 133 g/km.
Moreover, the actuator wheel slip limitation device (ARB), first introduced in the BMW i3s, is applied for the first time in a BMW internal combustion engine vehicle, controlling wheel slip quickly and sensitively. In conjunction with DSC, it minimizes understeer, a characteristic of front-wheel-drive vehicles.
The state-of-the-art infotainment system installed in the New 1 Series delivers driving information and facilitates easy vehicle control. The newly designed BMW Live Cockpit Professional provides necessary driving information through a 10.25-inch control display and a high-resolution instrument cluster. It supports new remote software upgrade functionality that automatically updates the latest software without visiting a service center, Intelligent Emergency Call that automatically makes emergency calls in urgent situations, BMW Online, and the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant features.
The Connected Package Professional offers remote services, concierge services, Apple CarPlay, and real-time traffic information service (RTTI) integrated with SK Telecom’s navigation service T map. The real-time traffic information service receives traffic flow, construction zones, accident situations, and speed camera information updated approximately every 3 minutes via the vehicle’s embedded SIM card using T map’s traffic data, providing more accurate and optimized route guidance.
