Yeonggwang-gun Reports Increase of 57 Marriages and 167 Births Compared to Previous Year
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Jeon Seong] Yeonggwang-gun, Jeollanam-do (Governor Kim Jun-seong) announced on the 6th that according to the marriage and birth statistics of December last year, the number of marriages increased by 57 and the number of births increased by 167 compared to the previous year.
In particular, the increase in the number of births compared to the previous year was the highest nationwide, exceeding Siheung-si, Gyeonggi-do, which ranked second nationwide, by 26 (141 births).
Last month, the county population was 53,852, down 3 from the previous month, showing a 57.5% slowdown in the decline rate compared to the previous year, resulting in 372 fewer decreases.
Through an organizational restructuring in January last year, the county established the Population and Job Policy Office and promoted various customized population and birth policies, achieving visible results and ranking first among cities and counties in the comprehensive population evaluation of Jeollanam-do.
This year, the county plans to implement additional new policies to recover the population.
Previously, starting from the 1st of this month, the county significantly expanded newborn childcare expenses, increasing support to 30 million KRW for the third to fifth child and 35 million KRW for the sixth child and beyond.
To create a healthy marital environment, the county will newly promote classes for prospective and newlywed couples and a happy trip for large families to foster a birth-friendly social atmosphere.
Support for housing loan interest, which was previously provided only for newlyweds and multi-child families for home purchase loans, will be expanded to include jeonse (key money deposit) loan interest, thereby easing the housing cost burden for newlyweds and multi-child families.
In addition, the county is focusing on customized youth policies such as the expansion and relocation of the Youth Center and the Youth 321 Project, as well as creating a youth entrepreneurship space street called “Youth Dream Workshop Street” by utilizing vacant stores in the old downtown area of Yeonggwang-eup to support stable settlement of young people.
A county official said, “We achieved visible results through various customized population and birth policies last year,” and added, “We will do our best to increase the population by vigorously promoting new and diverse policies this year as well.”
