Sonata and Grandeur Both Achieve 100,000 Units Club Last Year
[Asia Economy Reporter Woo Su-yeon] Hyundai Motor Company's 'national sedans,' Sonata and Grandeur, both joined the 100,000-unit club last year.
According to the automotive industry on the 4th, Hyundai sold 100,003 units of the Sonata and 103,349 units of the Grandeur in the domestic market throughout last year. While Grandeur sales decreased by 8.6% compared to the previous year, Sonata sales surged by 51.9% year-on-year.
In March last year, the Sonata fully revamped its 8th generation model, enjoying a strong new car effect. With a younger design, next-generation engine, and cutting-edge features, it received favorable reviews among domestic consumers.
Moreover, the Sonata's performance is significant as it achieved the 100,000-unit club purely as a passenger car despite adopting a premium strategy without releasing a taxi model.
The Grandeur launched its 6th generation facelift model in November last year, becoming the best-selling domestic car for three consecutive years. Although sales appeared to decline year-on-year due to a high base effect from the previous model's popularity among domestic consumers, the Grandeur remains the most popular vehicle in Korea.
The 6th generation Grandeur facelift model accumulated about 58,000 contracts over roughly two months starting from November last year. More than half of the pre-order customers were in their 30s and 40s, indicating that the Grandeur's owners have become younger than before.
The popularity of the Grandeur and Sonata is even more meaningful as it was achieved amid the rising popularity of sport utility vehicles (SUVs) in both domestic and international automotive markets.
Meanwhile, the third best-selling model in the domestic market last year was Hyundai Motor's Porter, which serves as a lifeline for self-employed workers, with 98,525 units sold. The fourth was Hyundai's mid-size SUV Santa Fe with 86,198 units, followed by Kia Motors' multipurpose vehicle (MPV) Carnival in fifth place with 63,706 units sold.
