[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Son Tae-seok] Starting from the new year 2020, Gyeongnam Province will increase passenger ferry fare support for island residents and fully operate a boarding management system using a scanning method.
According to the new coastal passenger ferry system, fare support for short-distance living sections within one hour, frequently used by island residents, will be expanded from the existing 20% to 50%. Additionally, fare support for small freight vehicles under 5 tons, which are most commonly used as daily transportation means for transporting daily necessities, will also be expanded from 20% to 50%. Gyeongnam Province expects that approximately 200,000 island residents and 16,000 freight vehicles annually will benefit from this expanded fare support.
To this end, Gyeongnam Province secured 687 million KRW in national funds, an increase of 367 million KRW compared to the previous year.
Along with this, a boarding management system that reads boarding ticket information (QR code) with a scanner when passengers board the ship and links the boarding information to the ticketing system will be fully operated. The simplified boarding procedure system for island residents will also be expanded. The simplified boarding procedure system allows island residents to register their photo with the local government of their residence, and in future ferry use, ticketing and boarding staff will complete the ID verification process by comparing the photo information with the actual person.
